Rita Carvalho teaches illustration, drawing, printing and history related subjects in the BA in Communication Design and the MA in Design at DELLI, as also in the MA in Visual Arts Education (Universidade Lusófona) and the BA in Illustration and Drawing (IPLuso). She is a member of Design ID, where she co-coordinates the Beyond Communication Design Lab. Her main topics of interest and research include social and racial representations in illustration, sustainable pedagogies and crafts, as also visual narratives, medieval illumination and letterpress. She also practices as an illustrator/ graphic artist, participating as an author in publications and events. She holds a PhD in Design with a thesis addressing racial issues in Portuguese illustration from Estado Novo (University of Lisbon, funded by FCT); an MA in Visual Arts (University of Évora); and a BA in Communication Design (University of Porto) with Erasmus Exchange at Willem de Kooning Academie, Rotterdam, NL.
