Delli
(Design Lusófona Lisboa) is a design department that critically challenges a discipline in profound transitions, exploring a variety of pedagogical models. Working as a continuous workshop with a network of leading professionals, researchers and educators, Delli aims to expand the design discipline in collaboration with our research centre, as well as local and international partners.

Why Choose Delli

︎ Built on a logical progression of key subjects – from methods to projects – the programme explores flexible curricula models, adapting to emerging interests and issues, both disciplinary and within society at large.

︎︎ In the final year of the programme, students codesign and develop workshops and events, collectively exploring the needs of a discipline and society in transition.

︎︎︎ Unique range of local partnerships, such as the Bordalo Pinheiro Museum, and international partners such as the Pratt Institute (New York, USA), for student exchange programmes.

︎︎︎︎ Delli’s programme works towards the development of hybrid, multidisciplinary and critical practitioners, while supporting specialist interests.

︎︎︎︎︎ Promotes autonomy by creating space for diverse practices, communities and approaches, facilitating internships as well as self-directed research projects.

Communication Design [BA]

︎︎︎ Structure

First Year
During the first year, the programme puts emphasis on method through an exploration of the fundaments of design, with a profoundly hands-on approach, from drawing to composition, typography to editorial design, from historic technology to production. Trial, error and experimentation are key aspects of this initial phase of the programme.

Second Year
The second year focuses on the development of the identity and critical dimension of the student, exploring different positions and challenging the past, present and future of the discipline. It does so through a variety of approaches and projects, from visual identity to exhibition design, to the study of typography and illustration, digital technology and interdisciplinary research.

Third Year
Finally, the third year consolidates the journey developed during the first and second years, exploring live projects, as well as highly experimental courses which push the boundaries of the discipline. Multiple collaborative projects are organised, and attention is given to the networks created inside and outside the programme, via the national and international guests who support and complement our pedagogic models. Adopting a research-led approach, and using both field-work and speculation, we push students to consider new and more sustainable social and economic models.

︎︎︎
Study Plan

︎︎︎ Facilities

The Delli Office is a central space for our programme, working as an hybrid educational, production, debate and sharing model. A variety of tools and means of production are available to the students during and beyond the context of the courses: 3D printing, laser cutting, plotters, risography, digital copiers which cohabit with multiple printing techniques such as screen-printing, fax machines, mimeography, or impact printing, as well as letterpress. The majority of our courses are taught here, and it is also the space where parallel programmes are run, including those which are student-organised, such as cinema and reading sessions.

MSc Dreege

The MA in Design is a multidisciplinary course that exists in a society in transition, in which design is a pivotal element in the construction of better, more diverse and sustainable futures. At a time of fast banalisation of design, this discipline is at a crossroads, following several decades of unidimensional visions and problematic assumptions of universality. This is a key challenge for this MA: to reflect, act and contribute meaningfully to the design of a more inclusive society, detached from predetermined trajectories and models. The MA in Design is therefore based on a multidisciplinary staff with various backgrounds, as well as national and international networks, providing space for in-depth research and work, pushing the limits of the discipline.

︎︎︎ Why Choose Our MA

︎ Current models of approaching design are not the only, or more appropriate ones to face the challenges in the decades ahead of us. In this sense, the present concepts of innovation or progress will be questioned and debated in our programme.

︎︎ Designers can not reduce themselves to technicians, nor be easily seduced by technology. This is an important issue that we explore as a critical forum, promoting a culture of collective debate.

︎︎︎ The design process is necessarily interdisciplinary: our programme is concerned with issues, not with the discipline itself, reaching out to other fields and forms of knowledge beyond academia or the traditional boundaries of design.

︎︎︎ Structure

First Semester
Focus is put in introducing students to research in design, exploring wide areas of knowledge, from culture to science, forming the basis of the challenges they face towards the contribution to better societies, better worlds.

Second Semester
This semester explores ecology, performance and multiple strands of interest in contemporary societies, debating and identifying gaps and potential in fractures, transitions, as well as historic moments in dierent contexts.

Third Semester
Questioning denitions of ‘innovation’, this semester uses projects aided by architecture and multidisciplinary approaches in order to test the reach of dierent design methods. Attention is given to strategies, tactics and processes.

Fourth Semester
This nal semester informs the production of a final dissertation, putting particular emphasis in narrative, arguments, sustainment, reconguration and work which can eectively challenge the status quo, broadening the horizon of the students and the discipline itself.

Research

The Center for Other Worlds (COW) is an interdisciplinary research centre for design and art, based at Lusófona University. It focuses on the development of perspectives that are not dominant nor imposed by the design discipline—through criticism, speculation and collaboration with various disciplines such as curating, architecture, visual arts, ecology and political theory—having in design an unifying element but rejecting hierarchies between them. The centre’s name makes a reference to the concept of otherness, thereby aiming at challenging universal visions of design and art. The centre’s core mission is therefore inscribed in its name.

OTHER DELLI WEEK 7: PICNIC

Could the picnic be a school or could it draw within an old school?

This week we took school out of doors. We challenged the inflexibility of educational spaces. We used the methodical and informal structure of a picnic and proposed that teachers and students explore the power of sharing and the sense of community of their preparation and enjoyment to discover new possibilities for space and collective learning.
